On 11 October the MMF CEO Mr Kevin J Borg discussed the implementation of the EU’s Emission Transport System (ETS) on Shipping with the President of the European Parliament, Dr Roberta Metsola, during a recent visit to Brussels.
Kevin J Borg conveyed the MMF’s concerns with the serious risks of business and carbon leakage arising from the implementation of this Directive. These concerns are shared by other Maritime Clusters within the EU, particularly the Mediterranean.
In light of this, the Forum, like many of its counterparts, was insisting that the implementation of the Directive be temporarily suspended until such risks are properly assessed and addressed on an ex ante basis to ensure the successful achievement of its desired and commendable climate-change objectives whilst ensuring continued and complete solidarity amongst all EU operators and member states.
