SHORT SEA SHIPPING

Short Sea Shipping (SSS) means the movement of cargo and passengers between ports situated in geographical Europe or between those ports and ports situated in non-European countries having a coastline on the enclosed seas bordering Europe.

SSS in Malta is today an integral part of the Malta Maritime Forum (MMF) and its scope is:

  • To provide up to date information on initiatives being taken on EU level in the field of SSS.
  • To provide assistance to Maltese interests wishing to avail themselves of this mode of shipping.
  • Participate and contribute to the European Shortsea Network (ESN) which has its seat in Malta.

Malta is a member of the European Shortsea Network, an association made up of 14 European countries with their main objective being that of promoting short sea shipping in Europe.  The Directorate General of Mobility and Transport of the European Commission whose mission includes the promotion of transport through shortsea shipping recognise this network. Malta hosts the official registration of the European Shortsea Network as a legal entity.
