In preparation of the European Shipping Summit held in Brussels on 19-20 September, the MMF engaged intensely with the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects to provide feedback from the maritime industry regarding the EU’s Fit for 55 Package, in particular new provisions related to the Emissions Trading System (ETS) regulations on Neighbouring Container Transhipment Ports.

The MMF’s researched position served as a basis for Minister Aaron Farrugia’s intervention during the European Shipping Summit during a panel discussion with high profile speakers including former European Commission President Barroso.

On this occasion, Minister Aaron Farrugia underlined the importance of Europe’s carbon neutrality and climate change objectives as well as the need to ensure security of supply and fair level playing field on both European and global levels.

However, referring to the Fit for 55 Package which he acknowledged as a closed dossier, Minister Farrugia warned that Europe cannot afford to impose unfair competitive disadvantages upon EU member states and risk of passing on transshipment activity from EU ports located in the Mediterranean to other continents. He said that the latest safeguards in the Neighbouring Transhipment Annex were noted but it was absolutely vital to ensure that monitoring of emerging potential competing ports to avoid devastating business and carbon leakages from the Package overall.

A lucky recipient, who arrived in the Port of Valletta aboard the MSC Meraviglia, was selected as the 700,000th passenger and given the opportunity to return to Malta in the near future with a 3-day break in Malta inclusive of flights for two persons, courtesy of the Malta Tourism Authority.

Valletta Cruise Port plc is anticipating closing the year 2017 with record passenger movements of approximately 780,000, aboard 340 cruise calls, with 2018 expected to be on the same levels. The cruise industry contributed over €94 million to the local economy in 2016. Central to this growth is the booming reputation of Malta’s award-winning port and the sterling service being provided; as well as a healthy rapport with the cruise lines, which is further being strengthened given that Valletta Cruise Port forms part of the Global Ports Holding family.

One of the world’s largest container vessels – and the biggest ever to visit Malta – has called at the Freeport on its maiden voyage.

Forming part of an exclusive club of megaships, the Munich Maersk stretches some four football pitches in length (399 metres) and spans a breadth of 58.6 metres. At full capacity, it can carry 20,568 TEU containers. To service the vessel, Malta Freeport deployed four super-post Panamax Quayside Cranes that were acquired specifically to ensure that the facility can cater for the world’s largest megaships.

Malta Freeport Terminals CEO Alex Montebello said: “The container ship industry has been changing dramatically as shipping lines commission bigger and better vessels. The challenge for us has been to have the vision to change with them so we can remain at the forefront of a hugely competitive market.

“The Freeport left no stone unturned to modernise its facilities and equipment to ensure it can handle vessels of such magnitude. It has also increased its workforce, organised intensive training programmes for employees and implemented new work practices to raise performance levels and service standards to the highest possible level.

“What we are seeing today is the fruit of the huge investment, amounting to some €240 million, that has taken place at Malta Freeport since it was privatised in 2004.”

Earlier this month, the Freeport successfully introduced the most advanced Terminal Operating System available worldwide that revolutionises the container handling process and will consolidate the Freeport’s standing as one of the leading hubs in the Mediterranean.

The Munich Maersk, built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in Korea, was delivered to Maersk Line – the world’s largest container shipping company – in June and belongs to a new breed of high efficiency vessels that can load a significantly higher number of containers as shipping lines seek to replace smaller, less efficient ships.
